If the label on the disposal under your sink says InSinkErator and the unit has started to hum, jam, go silent or leak, this page is for you. Fix Garbage Disposal repairs and replaces InSinkErator garbage disposals in Fort Lauderdale, Wilton Manors, and every visit starts by working out what is actually wrong. Fix Garbage Disposal is an independent company: it is not affiliated with or authorized by InSinkErator, and the InSinkErator name is used here only to describe the units we work on.
Whatever is wrong, keep your hand out of the sink opening. Switch the disposal off at the wall switch, unplug it or turn off its breaker, and only then look inside, using tongs or pliers rather than fingers. Most InSinkErator disposals have a hex socket in the center of the underside. With the power off, fit a hex (Allen) wrench into it and work it back and forth until it turns a full circle freely. That moves the flywheel and usually breaks a jam loose. Lift out whatever caused it with tongs, give the motor a few minutes to cool, then press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit once and try the switch.
If the unit still hums without turning, the jam is not cleared or the motor is struggling. If the red button pops out again as soon as you run it, something is still overloading the motor. If nothing happens at all, the fault is more likely in the power supply, the switch or the wiring. Each of those is a different job, and the pages linked below explain them. Pressing the reset again and again only adds strain.
InSinkErator units carry a label with the model and serial number, usually on the side or the bottom of the disposal. The space under a sink is cramped and the print is small, so a phone photo of the label is the easiest way to record it. Send that with a line about the symptom, what you have already tried and roughly how long the disposal has been in. That lets Fix Garbage Disposal understand which unit you have before anyone arrives.
A jam, a tripped reset, a loose power connection or a drain joint that has worked loose are repair jobs. A motor that stays dead once the jam is gone, rust or cracks on the housing, or water seeping from the body of the unit point to replacement, because a leaking body cannot be sealed. Fix Garbage Disposal will tell you which applies and why before any work starts. If a new unit is the answer, ask which models Fix Garbage Disposal would suggest for your sink and how you use it.
