Fix Garbage Disposal

KitchenAid garbage disposal repair in Fort Lauderdale, Wilton Manors

A KitchenAid garbage disposal is one part of a kitchen that often has other appliances plumbed into the same sink, and that matters when something goes wrong. Fix Garbage Disposal repairs and replaces KitchenAid disposals in Fort Lauderdale, Wilton Manors, and checks how the disposal and the dishwasher work together. Fix Garbage Disposal is an independent company that is not affiliated with or authorized by KitchenAid, and the KitchenAid name is used on this page only to describe the units we work on.

Which label to read

The KitchenAid name appears on many kitchen appliances, so make sure the model number you send comes from the disposal itself, not from the dishwasher or the range. The disposal's label is on the unit under the sink, usually on its side or bottom. A clear photo of it, plus a line about the symptom and roughly how old the unit is, gives Fix Garbage Disposal the right starting point.

When the dishwasher is part of the problem

In many kitchens the dishwasher drains through a hose into the side of the disposal. If the dishwasher leaves water standing, or water appears around that hose, the disposal may be the cause. On a newly installed disposal, a dishwasher that will not drain is often a sign the knockout plug in the dishwasher inlet was never removed. A clogged disposal chamber can also stop the dishwasher from emptying.

Jams, silence and the reset button

Whatever is wrong, keep your hand out of the sink opening. Switch the disposal off at the wall switch, unplug it or turn off its breaker, and only then look inside, using tongs or pliers rather than fingers. Remove anything visible with tongs. Most disposals have a reset button on the underside, and many have a hex socket in the center of the bottom for turning the flywheel by hand; check your manual to see what yours has. If the unit is completely silent after a reset, check the switch and the breaker. If it hums but will not turn, the jam is still there.

Repair or replace, honestly

Clearing a jam, reconnecting the dishwasher hose, resealing a joint or fixing a loose wire are repairs. A burned-out motor or a leak from the body of the disposal cannot be fixed, so replacement is the right answer there. Fix Garbage Disposal will tell you which you have before starting, and will not suggest a new unit when a repair will do.
