A Waste King disposal that will not grind, will not start or has begun to drip needs a clear diagnosis before anyone talks about a new unit. Fix Garbage Disposal works on Waste King garbage disposals in Fort Lauderdale, Wilton Manors, from a stubborn jam to a leak under the sink. Fix Garbage Disposal is an independent repair company, not affiliated with or authorized by Waste King, and the Waste King name is used here only to say which units we work on.
The model number is printed on a label on the disposal itself, usually on the side or the bottom. Under a sink it can be hard to read, so a photo taken with your phone is the easiest way to capture it. Send it along with the symptom, roughly how old the unit is and whether a dishwasher drains through it, and Fix Garbage Disposal will know what it is looking at.
Whatever is wrong, keep your hand out of the sink opening. Switch the disposal off at the wall switch, unplug it or turn off its breaker, and only then look inside, using tongs or pliers rather than fingers. With the power off, remove anything you can see with tongs. Some disposals have a hex socket under the unit for turning the flywheel by hand and some do not, so look at the bottom of yours and check the manual before reaching for a wrench. Most models have a reset button on the underside; press it once after the unit has cooled. If it trips again straight away, a fault remains.
Water under the sink usually starts at one of four places: the mounting at the sink flange, the dishwasher hose, the drain connection on the side, or the body of the unit. Run a little water with the disposal off and watch where the first drip forms. Slow draining is a different problem, usually a clog in the chamber or the trap below, and often caused by grease, fibrous peelings or coffee grounds.
Resealing a flange, tightening a drain joint, clearing a jam or fixing a loose connection are repairs. A leak from the body of the disposal, or a motor that stays dead after the jam is gone, means the unit has reached the end of its life. Fix Garbage Disposal will tell you which applies before doing anything. Afterwards, the guide on what not to put down a disposal helps keep the next jam away.
